  YBIP Mission
Developed by YBIP Core Leaders in 1999.

Youth Build Immigrant Power Project is made up of Asian youth who want to improve the working and living conditions of low-income Asian immigrant families. We struggle for justice, rights, peace and equality for all immigrants for better conditions, jobs, health and higher wages. YBIP wants immigrant youth to have a voice in our struggle for immigrant power. We train youth in organizing and leadership skills to be aware of community issues.

Since we were formed in 1997, some of our accomplishments are:

•   Developing a video about garment worker issues in Cantonese that we screened to over 1000 garment workers and allies.
•   Teaching citizenship and literacy classes to low-income immigrant women.
•   Outreaching to over 150 factories in Oakland and San Francisco to evaluate working conditions and involve more workers in fighting for their rights.
•   Training low-income immigrant youth about issues that affect them and their community.
•   Planning nonviolent peaceful direct actions to support workers issues like the BOYCOTT of DKNY and the STRIKE against the Courtyard Marriot in San Francisco.
•   Providing paid internships to low-income Asian immigrant youth in Oakland to learn organizing and leadership skills.

Youth in YBIP have also just produced a training manual and video about our work. If you are interested in ordering a copy please contact Stacy at stacykono@aiwa.org.
